Amazon parrots, a mammoth foot, a python, and a T-rex. Welcome to the Art Zoo Museum, housed in the beautiful 17th-century canal house of the Vrije Academie and rooted in the rich tradition of the Wunderkammer!
Inspired by 16th- and 17th-century collections
Step into a remarkable Wunderkammer: a “cabinet of curiosities” where art, nature and science came together to spark wonder and curiosity. In the 16th and 17th centuries, kings and wealthy citizens displayed collections of exotic and extraordinary objects for others to admire. Did you know that Amsterdam had its own Wunderkammers too? Rembrandt, for example, had one of his own.
A living tradition
In 2025, artists Darwin, Sinke & Van Tongeren brought the spirit of these historic Wunderkammers back to Amsterdam’s canals. During the guided tour, teacher Arianne Deligianis will reveal how the artists continue this centuries-old tradition through their remarkable taxidermy creations. Sign up and join on a fascinating journey of discovery through an extraordinary artistic animal kingdom!
